“A network powered by near-future technology” - Interop Tokyo ShowNet Report 2016

The network technology event “Interop Tokyo 2016” is being held at Makuhari Messe until June 10.

On the first day, the 8th, an information session and a tour of the site's “ShowNet” network were organized for the press.

Interop Tokyo is both an exhibition and a venue for companies to bring the latest network equipment to test and demonstrate interoperability and new technologies. In the United States and other countries, Interop no longer has a network of sites that also serve as a similar verification site, and Interop Tokyo's ShowNet is now the only one.

Mr. Takashi Tomine of the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT), who gave a press conference to journalists, proudly declared that it was a network built by best engineers from companies, research institutes and educational institutions that would operate in the near future. technologies. The scale of the project will represent 7.4 billion yen of equipment, 396 engineers, a power consumption of 135 kW for 100 V and 85 kW for 200 V and a total UTP cable length of approximately 30 km.

This year's ShowNet theme is “Scratch & Re-build the Internet Phase 3 ~Infinite Challenge~”. “Scratch & Re-build the Internet” is a theme I pursued over a three-year period starting in 2014. In the first year they built a strong network, in the second year they have maintained a delicate balance, and in their third year they will build on last year's strengths and take on new challenges.

“Information technologies of the near future”: video from MS and Apple

Ultra-thin tablets and smartphones. Image: Microsoft

What will the future look like in 10 years? It's hard for many people to imagine how technology will evolve in 10 years, but at Microsoft we specialize in thinking about where technology is going and how to make it happen.

Their recent video, “Productivity Future Vision,” depicts a near future similar to current technology, but much cooler.

This video, produced by Microsoft's Office development team, is a follow-up to the company's 2008 video, Microsoft 2019 (video below). It's based on some of the themes shown in the 2019 video, and some of the actors are the same.

In this video, Microsoft emphasizes the finesse of future screens. Smartphones, tablets, and desktop screens are all thin whiteboards on which we touch, swipe, and interact with images and videos.

Holographic displays are also used on the screen, and the images displayed are not limited to the physical dimension of the touchscreen used. You can also tilt the phone to turn bar charts into 3D. In this near-future world, paper seems completely obsolete.

About 3 minutes and 30 seconds into the video, where a man is video chatting with a woman seated at a desk, when the man pushes his chair back, the image of the woman enlarges accordingly. This is achieved by using facial recognition and IR sensor technology to measure the distance between your face and the screen.

Speaking of companies announcing such “concepts of the future,” Apple also comes to mind. In the late 1980s, Apple released a series of videos demonstrating a concept called Knowledge Navigator (video below). Now, with iOS and Siri touchscreen devices, we are getting closer to this concept.

Gender-neutral interview with George Inagi, CEO of Miramore, a Japanese jewelry brand from New York – WWDJAPAN

PROFILE: George Inagi/Miramore CEO and Brand Visionary

PROFILE: (George Inaki) Born in the Philippines in 1987. Raised in the Philippines until age 9, then in Japan. After graduating from college, she worked as a public relations representative for American Apparel. In 2014, she moved to New York, USA and is involved in the luxury, fashion and beauty industries as a digital PR manager. Current position since 2019 PHOTO: TSUKASA NAKAGAWA

MIRAMORE, a jewelry brand made in Japan based in New York, is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. The brand has offered gender-neutral jewelry since its launch. Since the brand's inception, we have offered jewelry featuring chains that are currently trending. They create jewelry with universal design in mind, such as using Kintsugi as a theme, which is seeing a resurgence, and incorporating Braille into jewelry. When the brand was founded five years ago, it created visuals featuring male models who, at first glance, looked like women. Although the movement for gender neutrality has grown in recent years, it was not yet mainstream at the time. We asked CEO and brand visionary George Inagi Miramore about the brand and its gender-neutral movement.

Non-gendered visual created at the time of creation

WWD: What was the reason and purpose for launching Miramore as a genderless jewelry brand?

George Inagi Miramore CEO and Brand Visionaire (hereinafter referred to as Inagi):Originally, there was no concept of gender or gender neutral. I have loved jewelry since I was a child and have worn earrings since I was in high school. At the time, there were no men around me who wore jewelry, but people would say, “You look elegant.” She also sold jewelry in Komehyo, where she learned the basics of jewelry making. When the brand launched, men's jewelry was aimed solely at rappers. Most of the items were sturdy silver jewelry such as CROM HEARTS and GORO'S, and lacked sophisticated designs such as the Kihei chains ordered from Okachimachi, a town known for its jewelry. On the other hand, most women's jewelry is delicate and cute. Many women around me are independent and strong-willed, so I wanted to create jewelry that they would want to wear. So I created jewelry that can be worn by both men and women.

WWD: When you launched, who created the visuals featuring male models looking like women?

Inagi:When I went to Paris, about 10 years ago, people would say to me, “Hello, Madame,” even though we were two blocks away. The visuals are a tribute to that. I found it funny that people took her for a woman when she had hair in two blocks. I really liked the 1990s photo book “Modern Lovers” by photographer Bettina Lheims and created the visuals as a parody of myself being mistaken for a woman. I thought it was normal for men to wear jewelry and I wanted to express myself differently from other brands. I did the casting myself and also did the makeup, which included dark blue shadow and pink lipstick. Photographed in 2019 at Bettina's Parisian studio.

A heritage brand based on the universal “kintsugi”

WWD: What is the concept of the brand?

Inagi:Designed in New York, handcrafted in Japan. I moved to the United States about 10 years ago. I've always liked things made in Japan, but there aren't many famous Japanese brands in the jewelry industry. Japanese brands offer designs that suit Japanese people, but I wanted to design jewelry that would be accepted all over the world. Our goal is to establish ourselves as a sustainable jewelry brand, rather than just a passing trend. Japanese culture and artisans have a sense of “taking care of things for a long time”, and this is a big difference from America. That's why I decided to create a Japanese heritage brand that reflects Japanese culture and craftsmanship through jewelry. There aren't many people my age who create heritage brands, but they are very important in transmission. I created Kintsugi jewelry because I believe the philosophy is universal, regardless of nationality or age. I grew up in a single-parent household, so it was difficult financially and I experienced adversity growing up. At the time, all I felt was anger and conflict, but when I discovered the philosophy of Kintsugi, I began to love myself even though I was hurt. Universal design tends to be seen as focused on people with disabilities, but no one in the world has ever been hurt. Only when you recognize your wounds can you become that person. The concept is that by wearing the jewelry, the person will receive kintsugi. That’s the message “Miramore” sends.

Gender neutrality spreads as social acceptability grows

WWD: In recent years, wearing men's jewelry has become increasingly popular in Japan.

Inagi:I think it's a very good thing. Recently, many men are wearing choker necklaces and hoop earrings as earrings. Fashionable young men started wearing them about five years ago in Milan, Italy. I think the clothes young people wear will become more and more popular. That's why I observe them in Harajuku and Shibuya and reflect them in my creations.

WWD: What do you think of the changes in gender consciousness in recent years?

Inagi:When I was 20, if a man carried a bag, he was usually called gay. In the past, earrings had attributes determined by whether they were worn on the left or right, but this is no longer the case. Over the past ten years, this mindset has rapidly evolved. Gender-neutral fashion is on the rise, but Gen Z men are a little different. In the past, macho masculinity was the norm, but social acceptance has broadened and the younger generation is more liberal. I live in SoHo and Gen Z is becoming more and more fluid. For those under 25, the stereotypes of men and women in fashion break down and intersect. So there are different genders, like male, female, non-binary, and it's up to each individual to decide. This is why it is now common to call people “They” instead of “He” or “She”.

The April 8, 2024 issue of “WWD JAPAN” introduces the gender-neutral wave that is mainly spreading in the field of jewelry. Including a report on the current state of men's jewelry, we explore gender consciousness in fashion through the real-life voices of four Gen Z and Millennials. The article about REN, a member of Generation Z who designs jewelry for Limerlik, will be published on April 15.

The Chinese government has established “Faculties of Future Technologies” in 12 universities, including Beijing and Tsinghua. Goals for technological supremacy in 15 years | 36Kr Japan | The largest media specializing in Chinese technology startups

China's Ministry of Education (equivalent to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) recently announced the 12 universities that will establish the school, which will explore future disruptive innovations and will develop the next generation of technology talent. The list included top domestic universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University, as well as prestigious local universities such as Xi'an Jiaotong University and Harbin Institute of Technology. Each university will build a world-class research system with a focus on areas with high growth potential, such as AI, health technology and smart cities, for which there is no winner overwhelming global.

In 2020, the Ministry of Education announced a policy to establish a new Institute of Future Technologies at a top university in the country and build the system over four years. It focuses on technologies that are expected to revolutionize the world within 10 to 15 years and is unique in that it brings together resources from companies, investment institutions and other entities rather than institutes individual research.

Peking University

As of June, 11 universities, excluding Tsinghua University, had announced the direction of their future technological institutes. Each university leverages its own strengths, defining priority areas such as molecular medicine, energy and environmental studies, robotics science and smart cities, aiming for a cross-border study program that is not limited by the framework of departments or existing knowledge systems.

For example, Peking University focuses on “advanced medical care” and studies the use of medical image data analysis technology, big data and AI in the medical field. In the long term, the idea is to build an integrated eight-year process from undergraduate to doctorate.

Mr Kono, who works in PR for brands including Mariha and Chaos, met his partner during a “serious marriage hunt”. The two met, started dating within a week and got married 6 months later in April 2020, a dramatic turn of events, and even their rings have a wonderful story behind them!

Ms. Kono: “I was so happy to have met him that I didn't even think about a ring at first. But I decided to have a wedding ceremony in Karuizawa, just the two of us, so I could leave her in Karuizawa. at least as a pledge. If we want to get married, we'll also need a ring.'' At the suggestion of my husband, who for some reason is particularly shape-conscious, we decided to go get a ring. (lol).

In 2020, as the novel coronavirus infection spread rapidly, the two went to pick out rings the day before a state of emergency was declared. While visiting several jewelers whose opening hours are until 6 p.m. and which will close from tomorrow, I found a Harry Winston ring that fit my finger perfectly.

“The customer service was excellent, and although I thought I would like to get one someday, I figured it was too early for me…so I went to another store. Then, around 5:45 p.m. , my husband suddenly told me he was going to the bathroom, so I didn't hear from him for a while. When I finally contacted my husband, he was at a Harry Winston J store. I was moved by his kindness as he ran to buy the ring.

Kono generally specializes in chic, minimal coordination. When layering rings, she seems to be conscious of the balance of “colorful stones, gold and diamonds.” When purchasing jewelry, my rule is to use yellow gold to create a sense of unity.

Additionally, what Kono acquired just before the wedding, and has recently worn again as a talisman, is Mariha's rose quartz ring, which means “self-love”.

“I believe my encounter with the stones and my change in valuing my time led me to get married. Also, when I want to nag my husband, I rub his ring and it turns into nice words.” I have the feeling that I will be rejected (lol).

The key point of Kono's coordination this time was the Signe knit sweater. Gold accessories are layered with modern wooden bracelets to highlight the hands.

“The hand-stitched pom poms and wooden bangles give it an artisanal touch. To keep it from looking too warm, I kept the hands simple and minimal with a gold base.”
